A message from the American Cancer Society

Hi my name is Tony Agreste and I work for The American Cancer Society. The reason I am e-mailing you is because this fall we are having our 2nd Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Downtown Norfolk and we are sending out invitations to our Kickoff Breakfast in August. We believe reaching out to local Civic Leagues will help us bring together the community to not only honor the survivors and victims of Breast Cancer but to also increase the awareness as well. Our biggest goal is to reach out to the community and find individuals who have been personally affected or that have a strong interest in the issue of Breast Cancer and extend them invitations to our walk. Please feel free to contact me back by e-mail or you can reach me at 757-493-7971. Thanks for your time and I hope you can help us out.

Thank You Tesoro Corporation!

Click the link (http://www.tesorocorp.com/) to get to know the most recent corporate sponsor supporting our league.

We are very happy to announce the partnership with this wonderful organization, Tesoro Corporation. They are supplying the league a telephone number (328-9588) with voicemail offering direct contact with our members, support for the Neighborhood Watch program, and are creating new signs for the league which you will be seeing in September!

We are so appreciative not only for their product donations giving us much-needed communication tools, but moreover, the sharing of business knowledge and ideas.

Thank you sincerely Tesoro Corporation.

Meeting Nights To Change

We were asked by Principle Garrett whether we would consider changing our meeting days from the second Tuesday to the second Thursday of each month because the AES/PTA often have functions on those days which may make it difficult in scheduling our meeting dates for the school year '07-'08.

A decision was reached by the Board to go ahead with the change taking the second Thursday of each month so that we can maintain continuity. The benefits of changing would offer the opportunity for our Madam Mayor to attend when time permits, as well as security in knowing we will not have to look to other venues, which will disrupt the league's flow. We received word today that Mrs. Garrett has signed off on the change and the approved application has been sent to the city for filing.

With that being said, our next general meeting will be September 13th, Thursday at 7 PM at Arrowhead Elementary School.

See you then.

Dangerous Driver in the Arrowhead Area

Help us find him/her. If you have information about this driver please call the non-emergency Police number 385-5000; reference report #07041424 by Officer JJ Gordon.

Incident July 10, 2007 at approx 1:00 a.m. – corner of Susquehanna & East Chickasaw. The incident was witnessed by several people who reported that the driver was in a WHITE PICKUP TRUCK, they think it was a FORD and a recent year model. The truck will have front right quarter damage including some light green paint.

The driver was possibility drunk and driving very recklessly. You will see 20’ tire marks on Susquehanna Road – on the wrong side of the road. The driver was traveling eastbound; they were on the wrong side of the road before making the turn, obviously speeding, turned the corner (amazingly missing the stop sign); and hit a car parked properly on the side of the road. The damaged vehicle had damage all the way down the side of the car and had been struck hard.

If it were not for the resident's friends car parked where it was, this driver would likely have driven INTO the home or the large tree in the yard. They are lucky they didn’t hurt someone in the process. Please help us get this driver arrested and off the road before they kill someone.

POLL RESULTS: Contact Options for the League

The results are in. Nearly 8 out of 10 people surveyed said they want a central phone number for the league. We listened and took action.

We are excited to announce soon we will have a telephone number for the league. This will prove to be an important communication vehicle for those who do not have internet access and for keynote speakers or vendors on event days. Those that do have internet access, please continue using email whenever possible to keep our minute use to a minimum. However, we do realize there are times that a conversation is necessary.

An even more exiting development is that this option is being paid for by a local businessman. Since this will not be an unscheduled cost for the league potentionally over the monitary threshold, we will not have to vote on this issue in September as discussed at our June meeting.

More information will be released soon. Keep checking back.

Family and Friends CPR Class CANCELLED

The Family and Friends CPR Class has been postponed indefinitely due to not having enough scheduled participants.

We hope to be able to offer it later this year, perhaps in the Fall.

If you are interested in taking this course and are flexible, please email us at cafcivicleague@yahoo.com with your contact information. We will start a running list and once we get the appropriate number of participants, we then will schedule the class.

ARSONISTS STRUCK AGAIN

WE MUST TAKE ACTION

As some of you may know, in years past arsonists have set the pier at "Turtle Lake" on fire. On at least one occasion, they burned it to the point it had to be rebuilt. I discovered today that they are at it again. There is about a two foot burnt area on the front of the pier. This is in addition to the somewhat recent fires set in the woods behind Arrowhead Elementary.

We know there is graffiti being sprayed on trees, reports of drugs and paraphernalia being found, and now at least three fires that have been set in the remote woods at the park. There may be other incidents we are not aware of.

I believe we should gather together to formulate an action plan. Please email the league if you have any information or opinion on how we can protect our park and make it safer.

If you remember our first general meeting with Clay Bernick in November, he mentioned if the park was developed where upstanding visitors can come in, then those committing crimes will leave in fear of being caught. Also, he did offer the Eco-friendly almost invisible green fencing to cut off escape routes and keep hoodlums from cutting through the yards of our neighbors living on the edge of the park. In addition, I believe the Boy Scouts may have interest in helping protect and possibly assist in making minor improvements to the park as they did previously when the path and pier were put in place. These are issues we should investigate. By determining options we have available, we can make an educated decision on how we can protect our neighborhood park.
