Luminary Event Naming Sept. 12th at Central Library

The Council of Civic Organizations is opening their floor to us so we can hold a vote with those that are in attendance during their Sept. 12th meeting to name the luminary event. Individuals just like you and I will be voting on the top title choice for the luminary event. It's awesome that YOU can help name the luminary event. This is important because it will soon be considered a tradition for the City.

This meeting will be held at the Central Library on Va. Beach Blvd. near Loeman's Plaza at 7PM, Wednesday, September 12th.

Thursday, September 13th is our next meeting

Our meetings held at Arrowhead Elementary School are changing from the usual second Tuesday to the second Thursday of each month. The great news is we have AES as our venue for the entire school year!

General meetings are open to all residing within our neighborhood communities; homeowners and renters alike. All guests are welcome. Feel free to bring a friend to our next meeting being held at Arrowhead Elementary's cafetorium Thursday, September 13th at 7PM.

As a special treat, the Cub Scouts will be there for the first part of the meeting to offer popcorn as a fundraiser for the Scouts. They do so much for us, let's try to give back.

What can we do to stop crime in our park and woods behind Arrowhead Elementary?

Are you concerned about drugs, arson, vandalism and graffiti at our "Turtle Lake" (aka - CAF Neighborhood Park) and the adjacent woods behind Arrowhead Elementary? Have you heard about the gang activity in our neighborhoods? Would you support minor development if research showed it would curtail these type of reported criminal activities?

Would you like to have a durable picnic table to use at the park so you can host a picnic with family or friends? Could you envision being able to have an enjoyable afternoon where your children or grandchildren could explore a safe environment and play on simple playground equipment?

We understand "Turtle Lake" has been under the radar for many years and we know the importance of maintaining that atmosphere. We want to maintain that low level of traffic, but we also understand it is not being utilized by our neighbors because it simply is not as family friendly as it could be. Would the addition of a picnic table or a playground cause a high influx of traffic from outside our neighborhoods? Would it scare away unwanted visitors and stop the criminal activities now going on? Would it be worth it?

Let us know your thoughts. We're interested in hearing from you. Please scroll down to the bottom of the page and fill out the POLL.

SAFETY CONCERN

I thought it important to forward this email as it reports recent, and even more importantly, a trend of vandalism. This is another cry out that we need volunteers to make our Neighborhood Watch Program strong and visible. Let's ban together to protect our neighborhood before we have to "take back our neighborhood". We all must be aware.

This attached email below came from a neighbor in Arrowhead on Susquehanna. Please read on...
I just spoke with Officer Macon to file a vandalism report. The Officer mentioned that there were 60+ similar (blunt object to glass) type acts of reported vandalism last night (Monday early AM - three days ago) in the Arrowhead and Newtown/VB Blvd areas. Over 2000 such acts last year at this time (unless I misunderstood his comment). He says that it starts up every year at this time and the only way to catch them is for the residents to call in and report the activity ASAP.

Silly me, I was tired at 12:40 a.m., and didn’t get up to look out the window when I heard the thud. Now I will.

You might want to put the word out to Neighborhood Watch folks to be on the look out for the trouble makers.

Members and neighbors,

The Council of Civic Organizations has taken interest in our lulminary tradition we started last year and is helping spread the joy throughout the entire city. They have invited the citizens of the City the great opportunity to name the tradition. Visit the website at http://www.lightthenightvb.blogspot.com/ to find out more and to submit your title choice.

THE DEADLINE IS AUGUST 7th.

Who knows. Twenty years from now you may be able to say, "I named this tradition way back when it first started in 2007".
