Property maintenance during the busy months

Summer is a busy time with vacations, cook outs, out of town visitors and general family functions. One thing that you might tend to neglect during these busy months is your property. Think twice about putting off these type of duties because Code Enforcement officers patrol our neighborhood frequently.

If you go out of town for a week or longer, be sure to not only stop your mail and newspapers, but also arrange for someone to cut your grass for you. It should be second nature for you just if you have to schedule someone to water your plants or feed your fish. We wouldn't want you to receive a violation from Code Enforcement for having your grass too high. The time allowed for correcting most property maintenance violations is seven days. If you're gone more than 7 days, you might have a not-so-warm welcome home.

Please review the information below. If you or someone you know has this type of violation, heed this warning... Code Enforcement officers frequent our neighborhoods and you will be sited if you don't take action. Our Secret Helpers can help those that are in real need, but if you can do it yourself and simply decide not to, than you may be faced with financial hardships due to your inaction.

Below is a list of common property maintenance violations and following are the City Codes outlined.
  • Overgrowth of weeds or grass
  • Accumulations of trash or junk
  • Dead or diseased trees - hazards
  • Inoperable vehicles on private property
  • Waste management violations
  • Illegal dumping
  • Graffiti on private property

Weeds and Grass Restrictions (City Code 23-50) - It is unlawful for any property owner or occupant to allow grass or weeds to grow over 10 inches in height. This code also prohibits any accumulation of trash, garbage or litter on the premises.
Hazardous Tree (City Code 23-50.1) - Dead, diseased trees certified by City Arborist as hazardous are required to be corrected by owner of property.
Open Storage of Junk (City Code 23-48) - It is unlawful to leave dilapidated furniture, appliances, machinery, building materials or any other item which is rusted, wrecked, junked, dismantled or inoperative out in the open. (Licensed junk dealers are exempt.)
Inoperable Vehicle Ordinance - Vehicles must be in operating condition and must, at least, have either a valid state license plate or a valid inspection sticker.
Waste Management (City Code Chapter 31) - Proper storage and disposal of waste, dumpster screening and private waste collection at the oceanfront, and other provisions of the code are enforced.

Code Enforcement works closely with other city agencies such as Zoning, Permits and Inspections, the inspection divisions of the Fire Department, the Health Department and the Department of General Services to ensure Virginia Beach citizens have safe housing and quality neighborhoods.

For more information or to obtain a listing of codes, please call the Code Enforcement division at 385-4421.

NEWS RELEASE - Seizure of Illegal Fire Works this weekend

MEDIA CONTACT:
Richard Kephardt, Fire Marshal - 385-4228

Virginia Beach Fire and Police Departments Join Forces to Seize
Illegal Fire Works This Holiday Weekend

Virginia Beach Fire and Police departments are joining forces this July 4th holiday weekend to keep citizens safe by warning them that the use of fireworks is illegal. “The public’s safety is our top priority,” stated Virginia Beach Fire Marshal Richard Kephart. Teams from both agencies will be on-duty throughout the city enforcing state and city codes. Regardless of where fireworks are purchased, the possession or use of fireworks is a violation of the City of Virginia Beach Code section 12-43.2. Virginia Beach City Code specifically prohibits: firecrackers, skyrockets, torpedoes and other fireworks that explode, travel laterally, and rise into the air or fire projectiles in the air. All illegal fireworks will be seized and the responsible party may be issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) or a summons from a team member.”

More fires are reported on Independence Day than on any other day, and fireworks account for half of those fires (more than any other cause of fires). In 2006, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated more than 9,200 people for fireworks-related injuries. Sparklers, fountains, and novelties alone accounted for one-third of these emergency room fireworks injuries. Sparklers have a burning temperature of 1200ºF – three times hotter than matches.

We encourage citizens to enjoy one of the FREE fireworks shows scheduled at Mount Trashmore Park or along the Oceanfront beginning at 9:30 p.m. Friday evening.

For more information on fireworks, contact the Fire Marshal’s Office at 385-4228.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) takes aim at consumer fireworks. View the latest public service announcement urging people not to use consumer fireworks because they are too dangerous. Fireworks are responsible for thousands of fires and injuries each year. On Independence Day in a typical year, more U.S. fire are reported than on any other day. The Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks is coordinated by NFPA.
