The league meeting was called to order at 7pm by Brenda A. Troop 499 Boy Scouts, with leader Dave A, presented the colors and pledge of allegiance. The number present was 23.

Topic: Importance of CPR and an AED heart defibrillator

Dan B of the Tidewater Center for Life Support Training spoke, gave a demonstration, and answered questions on CPR and AED. Dan encouraged everyone to become knowledgeable about CPR and to act if the need arises. He gave the symptoms of a heart attack (chest and arm pain, nausea, sweating, shortness of breath) and called it the #1 killer in America. He detailed the four step chain of survival.
1. Early Access 2. Early CPR 3. Early Defibrillation 4. Early Care

Dan demonstrated on a mannequin, answered questions and announced a CPR, First Aid, and Babysitting Training Course on June 25th and 26th from 10:30-2:00 at the Kempsville Library for $45. Call (757) 446-5926 to register.

Topic: Mended Hearts Association Speaker

John M is a member of the Mended Hearts Association. This organization, started by Dwight Harkin, in 1951, is made up of survivors of heart attacks or heart disease. They visit, support, and offer assistance to others with these illnesses. There are 24,000 members across the country. They provide hope and encouragement to the patients and their families.

The Mended Hearts Association will sponsor a CPR course for the league at the Kempsville Library for a donation of $5 per member on July 7. Although not certified, the member will receive all training. For a $10 donation, the member can take the test and receive a certificate. A second date will also be scheduled. Contact Brenda A if interested. The class is limited to 24.

Topic: Final Announcements

Brenda A gave an update on our former Chair, Cherese J. She has had her surgery and is recovering well. We miss her and wish her well.

Communication options were discussed, so that league members can leave and receive information. This will most probably be a voice mail service. Prices and plans are being reviewed. The executive committee will pursue this a little further before voting.

There will be no Civic League meetings in July or August. There is a league sponsored CPR Class in July. There is no venue available for August. Meetings will resume in September at Arrowhead Elementary School.
Please support the Safety Fair on June 23rd at Point of View Elementary.

Respectfully submitted by Carole B, league secretary
