Minutes for Civic League Meeting at Point of View Elem. School

The league meeting was called to order at 7pm by Brenda A. Troop 499 Boy Scouts, with leader Dave A, presented the colors and pledge of allegiance. The number present was 23.

Topic: Importance of CPR and an AED heart defibrillator

Dan B of the Tidewater Center for Life Support Training spoke, gave a demonstration, and answered questions on CPR and AED. Dan encouraged everyone to become knowledgeable about CPR and to act if the need arises. He gave the symptoms of a heart attack (chest and arm pain, nausea, sweating, shortness of breath) and called it the #1 killer in America. He detailed the four step chain of survival.
1. Early Access 2. Early CPR 3. Early Defibrillation 4. Early Care

Dan demonstrated on a mannequin, answered questions and announced a CPR, First Aid, and Babysitting Training Course on June 25th and 26th from 10:30-2:00 at the Kempsville Library for $45. Call (757) 446-5926 to register.

Topic: Mended Hearts Association Speaker

John M is a member of the Mended Hearts Association. This organization, started by Dwight Harkin, in 1951, is made up of survivors of heart attacks or heart disease. They visit, support, and offer assistance to others with these illnesses. There are 24,000 members across the country. They provide hope and encouragement to the patients and their families.

The Mended Hearts Association will sponsor a CPR course for the league at the Kempsville Library for a donation of $5 per member on July 7. Although not certified, the member will receive all training. For a $10 donation, the member can take the test and receive a certificate. A second date will also be scheduled. Contact Brenda A if interested. The class is limited to 24.

Topic: Safety Fair - June 23rd - 10-2pm Point of View School Please Come!

Ginny P gave the area crime statistics. Carolanne Farms had 12 incidences in May. Several of these were drug arrests of teenagers in the Carolanne Farms Park. Arrowhead had 3 incidences.
She also announced the fun and free things coming up at the safety fair, June 23, Saturday, at Point of View School from 10-2pm. There will be a monster fire truck, regular fire engine, CPR, IDENT-A-KID, Sentara on skin safety, Karate for Christ, Pool Safety, McGruff, Bike Rodeo, Hot dogs, and Neighborhood Watch program. Come out and join us!!

Topic: Treasury Report

Wayne T reported that we now have 83 paid members. The current treasury balance is $3551.93. The bulk of the budget goes to the newsletters and mailing expenses.

Topic: Final Announcements

Brenda A gave an update on our former Chair, Cherese J. She has had her surgery and is recovering well. We miss her and wish her well.

Communication options were discussed, so that league members can leave and receive information. This will most probably be a voice mail service. Prices and plans are being reviewed. The executive committee will pursue this a little further before voting.

There will be no Civic League meetings in July or August. There is a league sponsored CPR Class in July. There is no venue available for August. Meetings will resume in September at Arrowhead Elementary School.
Please support the Safety Fair on June 23rd at Point of View Elementary.

Respectfully submitted by Carole B, league secretary

Carolanne Farm Civic League Meeting Tuesday, February 13, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 7pm by Cherese J.

Troop 499 Boy Scouts, under leader Dave A, presented the Colors followed by the Pledge of Allegience.

Attendence was approximately 55.

TOPIC: Proper Fats and Oil Disposal

Discussion: Catherine LaB from the Public Utilities Department of Virginia Beach explained how improper disposal of FOG (fats, oil, and grease) in our home sewer lines causes very serious backups and sanitary sewer overflows. The Kempsville area alone had six such major overflows last year. Ways to prevent such grease from our drains follow.

  • Simply do not put grease down your drain. Use cans or fat trappers to store the grease instead.
  • Scrape your dishes carefully and wipe with a paper towel.
  • Avoid using garbage disposal for any greasy items.
  • Use strainers in your sinks and empty into garbage cans.

A question and answer session followed.

TOPIC: Treasurer and Membership Report

Discussion: Wayne T reported the current treasury balance is $22581.63 with 34 current voting members as of January 31, 2007.

TOPIC: Spring Egg Hunt Plans

Brenda B, reporting for Brenda A, announced plans to host an egg hunt and other contests for children and grandchildren of the neighborhood either at Carrow Baptist Church or at Turtle Lake Park (special permit required) on March 31st, a Saturday. More information is currently posted on this blog. Members are being asked to contribute candy, plastic eggs, or helium balloons to defray costs. The contact person is Brenda A.

TOPIC: Chairs Approved

Debbie B was approved by a members' show of hands to chair the Development and Restoration Committee. Also, Jason Haywood was approved as co-chair of the Safety and Security Committee.

TOPIC: Crime Stats and Neighborhood Watch

Ginny P related that the new format of crime stats no longer includes streets, just the crime, date, and the neighborhood. Our area of Kempsville had 59 total reports. This was the most of any Virginia Beach neighborhood areas. This makes the idea of Neighborhood Watch Committees even more pertinent. There are block captains in place for our civic league area. All citizens have to agree to do is to be the eyes and ears that report suspicious people, behavior, etc. to either their captain or the police. To get a metal Neighborhood Watch sign, a captain must secure 80% of the signatures in his/her section. A question and answer session followed.

TOPIC: History Report

John S, Sr. reported for his son, who had a prior committment, that they are continuing to gather information, pictures, and tidbits about the Carolanne Farms area regarding its early history. The civic league hopes to participate in the history festival on the Virginia Beach boardwalk in late April. If you have any artifacts, pictures, or stories, please contact John S through the civic league.

TOPIC: Meet and Greet a New Neighbor

This is a brief refreshment break that also allows members to meet their neighbors and make new acquaintances.

TOPIC: Approving Proposed Bylaws for 2007

The league Bylaws were presented, along with any proposed changes, by Cherese J and Brenda A. Members used red-and-green sided membership cards to vote on these changes. The Bylaws were approved with limited changes. Most of these merely offered clarity to sentences. The Bylaws are viewable on this blog.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00pm. The next meeting will by Tuesday, March 13th. The topic to be covered will be code enforcement.

Respectfully submitted: Carole B, Secretary
