One of HRT’s primary concerns is safety.  They have prepared kits to educate Norfolk Public School children as well as Virginia Beach children regarding safety issues.  These trains will be moving at 55 mph and will be bi-directional.  These trains will have accommodations for luggage, bikes and wheelchairs.  Trains will run every 7 minutes during peak hours, every 15 minutes off hours.
Research has shown that property values usually increase around areas with light rail access.

CAFCL Academic Scholarship IS funded. Now it is time to apply.

Parent or advocate for our neighborhood graduating high school seniors,

Our league received a generous donation fully funding our Carolanne Farm Civic League Academic Scholarship.  Therefore, now we need students and their parents to come together to apply for the scholarship.

Any student residing in the neighborhoods of Arrowhead, Carolanne Farm, Carolanne Point, Huntington, Huntington Estates or Plantation Cove neighborhoods exhibiting academic success and a passion for giving back to the community in some way are eligible and can compete for the $500 CAFCL Academic Scholarship.

We are aware the Virginia Beach Public Schools offer academies and students may attend a school out of district, or may attend private school.  Therefore, it is not a requirement students attend Kempsville High School, nor the household be a member of the league.

We do encourage all neighbors to become members of the league as $5 of each $25 membership is earmarked for the CAFCL Academic Scholarship Fund.  The remaining $20 helps fund our yearly 4th of July Parade and other social events. If you would like an membership application, please email the league at cafcivicleague@yahoo.com.  Additionally, the scholarship will be awarded during our next meeting with will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd, 7PM at Carrow Baptist Church.

To centralize the application process, all applications are to be mailed or hand delivered to Ms. Khara Meer of the Kempsville High School Guidance Office on or before Thursday, March 31st.  Kempsville High School's address is outlined in the application.  Any application received after March 31st, 2011 may not be submitted for consideration.  Therefore, apply early.

Additionally, if you know of another deserving senior in our neighborhoods, please feel free to forward this application.  Also, we have been advised that it will be listed on the VBPS's Scholarship Central website (http://www.vbschools.com/scholarship/index.asp).

Thank you and good luck.  We know you will make us proud.

Sincerely,
Brenda Armitage
CAFCL President

CAFCL Scholarship Fund

Neighbors,

Just thought I'd drop a 'reminder' about the scholarship.  Of course, I think it's one of the most positive things the League can do for the neighborhood, and I hope you will help find a way to continue this valuable gift to our future leaders.

We currently are at about $135 and believe we brought in more dollars at the last meeting (Feb. 1st).  However, we are still short of our $500.  As outlined in the newsletter, we only grant the CAFCL Scholarship fund when it is fully funded.  That process takes you.  Therefore, since there is only 1 meeting (May) and the scholarship should be awarded at that meeting, it seems we need to take action as a neighborhood NOW if we are going to get this done this year.  Otherwise, the funds will continue to grow and we'll distribute the scholarship to a worthy candidate in 2012.
A significant fact is that the application on the VBSchools website with a closing date of 3/31/11 and to ask Ms. Bateman at Arrowhead if she's willing to again use her committee as the selection committee.

If you want to donate to the fund, please email the league at cafcivicleague@yahoo.com or call Brenda Armitage @ 714-2772.  We need to keep track of what is coming, so we know if we're going to make goal.  We can not accept cash, but you can send money orders or checks made out to Carolanne Farm Civic League (or CAFCL), PO Box 62651, Virginia Beach, VA 23466.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT - Do not approach vehicle

If you see this vehicle in your neighborhood, please contact the police. They are suspects in many burglaries and larcenies that has occurred in the area. Do not approach them, simply call the police. There are warrants out for their arrest. The license plate does not belong on the truck so it may be a different one. Pay attention to the detail such as the sign on the side, the ladder on top, and the black and silver wheels. If you happen to see them and call the police, send me an email about it as well. Thanks.
