NEED VOLUNTEERS and NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
If you would like to volunteer, come to our meeting on Sept 15th, 7PM (call 714-2772 for directions) and step forward to be the "Sunshine Committee" Chairperson. We'd love to have you. At that time, we can discuss what we can do for others in the future. If something else interests you, please speak up. We know your talents are valuable and we'll always have a place for you in our neighborhood volunteer group.
Our ideas for the "Sunshine Committee" in the past was to have someone welcoming all new neighbors to the neighborhood with a welcoming basket with a copy of a flier outlining our FB, Website, NL, Meeting Info, and a past copy of a newsletter. Additional duties would be if members pass away or have serious illnesses, we'd send cards or drop by to connect personally. I think any of you would be wonderful at this... and the time devoted would be minimal... but would make a most positive impact.
Additionally, we are looking for individuals to sign up to be block captains, or volunteer to ask their fellow neighbors if they'd like to be the block captain. Responsibilities of a block captain are:
- Visits assigned homes (10-15) to sign residents up for the program.
- Acts as a liaison between the Coordinator and his/her area of responsibility and disseminates
- information communicated to him/her which may assist the police.
- When new residents move in, invite them to join the program.
- Hand out crime prevention literature, etc. as needed.
- Maintains regular contact with the Coordinator.

From Leta Krieger - Our VBPD Crime Prevention Officer
Hi everyone, first I want to thank all of you who participated in National Night Out last night. I had a great time visiting with the different communities, chatting with you and your neighbors, and meeting new folks. I was not able to visit all the participating communities in the 4th Precinct, but I did visit several and everyone did an outstanding job with their event. Thank you for all you do to keep your neighborhoods safe!
I also want to take this opportunity to remind you all to remain vigilant about home security and safety in your areas. Residential burglaries involving large screen TV’s are still problematic throughout our City; the 4th Precinct has certainly experienced its share of these incidents over the summer. The vast majority of these cases are occurring during the day while the victims are either at work or away elsewhere. Forced entry is made, often from the rear of the house, and the suspect(s) are stealing large screen TV’s as well as other valuable items. It is very important to keep a list of all your electronic items (TV’s, computers, I-pods, etc.) which includes make, model, and most importantly, serial number, of each item. Take it a step further and photograph or videotape all your valuable items (especially jewelry and those tools which do not have serial numbers) and keep your list and/or photos/videotapes in a secure place.
Please be extra aware for any suspicious activity in your communities. Burglars will usually knock on a front door to see if anyone is home first; if they do not get an answer, they will typically make their way around to the back where they are less likely to be seen and force their way through a door or window. If they do get an unexpected answer to the door, they may say something like, “I’m looking for John Smith – is he here? Sorry – I must have the wrong house.” We really need to make an extra effort to look out for each other, especially for our neighbors who are away at work all day or gone on vacation. Please report all suspicious persons to the Police Non-emergency number – 385-5000. Crimes in progress (e.g., if you see a couple of thugs going out your neighbor’s back door with a 50” flat screen television) should be called in to 911. I am attaching a copy of our Home Security booklet for you to share with neighbors, family, and friends – please take the time to read through it. If you have any other questions or need any additional assistance, please do contact me.
Thank you for all you are doing and stay safe!

URGENT CRIME BULLETIN:
A suspicious vehicle was seen parked near the victim’s home. Once the victims parked their car, the suspect approached the parking vehicle, pointed a shotgun at the driver and demanded that they turn over what they had.
The main suspect was a younger African American, approximately 6-6’2”, 180 lbs. wearing a black ‘biker-style’ ski mask with a skull and crossbones on it.
The victims turned over a pocket book and within 30 minutes, the suspects went on a shopping spree in Norfolk.
Also last night, there was a car alarm set off at about 2 AM. Then later, at about 5AM, at least one person wearing all black was seen running through the backyards of the homes that back up to “Turtle Lake” (Carolanne Farm Park).
• PLEASE, keep your homes and vehicles locked at all times.
• REPORT ALL SUSPICIOUS VEHICLES that do not belong in the neighborhood.
• Always, REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY.
• CALL the VB Police Department’s non-emergency number, 385-5000, or 911 if you see a crime in progress.
• SHARE THIS GROUP and THIS POST with all of your friends and neighbors that live in CAF/AH.
• Post if you see something also, but ONLY AFTER you report it to the VB Police Department. They are the ones that need to hear it first!
